Seven ways to find the best wines on a restaurant wine list

I judge wine lists harshly. Most of the time there are too many chardonnays, not enough Rieslings, few stellar inexpensive wines by the glass, no descriptions, and not much passion in the selections. No list is perfect, but getting around the fluff is an art.

1) Beware the "house wine." Often,… Continue

Former Kim Crawford winemaker, Jules Taylor, expands her own winery offerings

Strong women role models are not particularly myriad in the US wine business. More female winemakers have emerged in the past 20 years but they have a long way to go before they dominate. It happens more across the oceans than where the Women's Sufferage Movement began.

Like in New Zealand. I do a happy, girl-power fist pump when I see a lady step out from under a cushy corporate winemaking job and reach soaring success on her own. Meet Jules Taylor, former winemaker from… Continue

Has Bordeaux become irrelevant?

It's strange to feel sorry for one of the most profitable, well-known wine regions in the world, but I do. "Normal" people may have heard of "Bordeaux" but they don't necessarily drink the wines. They are the drink of snobs, collectors and sycophants; untouchable and unbeknownst by the common folk.… Continue

Smart transition: J Vineyards and Winery story

Sometimes people can see the writing on the wall. Call them sages, clairvoyants or simply smart, some wineries — who typically wallow stagnantly in tradition — can do the right thing for their business. And some do it before everyone else does. Three years ago, Judy Jordan, Founder and President of California sparkling wine house J Vineyards and Winery in Russian River Valley (Sonoma County), perhaps sensed the industry might be headed for some rough times. The economy was wavering,… Continue

Viva La Resolution! New year, new wine habits

As life after the holidays settles back into its normal high-stress level, I tame my tension with daily wine rations - its inherently soothing qualities make me slow down and savor. If you need to (re)unite with your wine Zen, perhaps some 2010 resolutions are in order.

Resolution No. 1

Go organic. Maybe the chemicals polluting our wine are polluting our minds. Support the wineries making an effort to avoid the use of pesticides, fungicides and herbicides on… Continue

Hi Taylor- it is great to see someone else from Tampa Bay on here! I don't know if you know about our winery, but we will actually be having our barrel tasting party in Tampa on April 3rd and this will be the first one open to non-wine club members. If you are free, you should come by! Let me know if you are interested and I will add you to my email list- I will be sending an email with details in the next week or so.
